Wow - what a busy year for Lodge 26!

Candidates: we have 9 candidates at various of degrees!
Events:

- The 2010 Masonic Foundation Soccer Games are fast approaching July 23rd and 24th. As in the past two years, Lodge 26 will be providing the food for the players and staff on Friday evening and the concessions for the games on Saturday afternoon.

- The 2010 Shrine Picnic will be Sunday, August 22nd. The Potentate will be in attendance and the entire Masonic Family is welcome!

- Masonic Bingo is as popular as always - THANKS to those who tirelessly work to make our Bingo so successful and if you can help out, please contact SW Rich Petak.
Building:

- The building was broken into over Memorial Day weekend. All doors were pried open, but nothing appeared to be wrecked (other than the doors) or stolen. We are working with the insurance company to get damages repaired and we are also working with the police to get the responsible parties apprehended.

- We are planning to continue with construction on the lodge-side kitchenette while the lodge is dark this summer.

If you can help with ANY of our events, construction, degrees, etc. please contact us.

I hope everyone is having a great spring!

Your Blue Lodge continues to be very busy.

First of all, we have a LOT of degree work going on. Almost every Stated Communication features at least one degree and we are often holding special meetings on the second Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM (after the Board Meeting) for additional degree work. Be sure and join us on the sidelines and support your new brothers!

Also work in the new kitchenette is progressing with city plan approval complete and building permits underway. If you can lend a hand with demo and/or framing, let us know.

The Lodge website is undergoing some modernization, including Facebook and Twitter. If you want to know what is going on in the Lodge, be sure and check out the calendar (it is ALWAYS current) at the top of the main website: lodge26.com

George was diagnosed on Sept. 15th, 2009 with Multiple Myeloma. Thanks to our doctor who became suspicious when a couple of results on routine blood work were not normal. After being referred to two wonderful oncologists, chemo was started and treatments have continued off and on since. We are so thankful to our family and friends, our church family and to God for helping us this far.

Brethren –

it is a very EXCITING YEAR !

CANDIDATES:

Already in 2010 we have NINE candidates in various stages of membership. To accommodate this influx of membership, we will be holding degrees at 7:00 PM the first, second and third Thursdays of February and March... with additional Lodge dates to be added and announced as needed.

Please support your lodge and our new brethren by filling in the sidelines at these exciting events!

BUILDING:

We are excited to announce that there is a large community interest in the use of our banquet facility and to aid in this interest, the Board of Trustees has enacted a phased approach to transform the Masonic Center into a true “dual use” building.

The beginning phases of this transformation have been completed and include:

Re-keying of the building to include a rental key level.
A Building use analysis which includes better and more efficient use of the storage rooms, the planned relocation of the Jobie room and a planned warming kitchen/lunch room to seat a minimum of 24 in the fraternal end of the building (utilizing the current Jobie room, part of the lobby and a storage room).

All information regarding building use and/or rental (including possible dates available and procedures to reserve dates) will be posted in real time on the Lodge website: lodge26.com and monthly in the Lodge ante room… (the website calendar currently reflects all events occurring at the building EXCEPT for bingos. Bingos WILL be a part of the calendar by mid-February).

To request a building reservation for an event, please email (this this the fastest method) SW Rich Petak (richard.petak@lodge26.com) or WM Scott Bond (scott.bond@lodge26.com) or call the Lodge (920-922-5800) and leave a message. Please note that the building – banquet facility, lodge room, etc – will not be considered reserved for ANY event other than normal state communications until a representative of the building committee has submitted to you a written contract for your event.

NEW KEYS:

The new keys are much more secure than the previous keys in five major ways:

The keys themselves are not able to be copied.
The building has been keyed on a four level security approach – meaning that the lowest level security key (banquet rental key) will not open fraternal secure areas and so on.
Keys are signed out only on a yearly basis - based on the office held and not by individual, and are 100% accounted for and kept track of. (For example the key that I now hold is reserved for the Worshipful Master and next year I will turn that key over to the Key Controller who will reassign that key to the new Master of the Lodge.)
The Board of Trustees key policy has also designated that each appended group can designate up to two representatives to receive keys for the term up through their next installation. (It is my wish that appended bodies not view keys as an entitlement to those in high office, but as an aid to the appended bodies and assigned to those people most likely to utilize the keys most effectively to open/close the building, etc.)
Those who do not have a key, but who have Masonic affiliation and are preauthorized to use a portion or all of the facility will be issued a temporary key to be returned at the close of their event.

This new key policy is not intended to make things tougher or to exclude anyone. As I previously stated, Blue Lodge keys are assigned based on office or appended body, NOT by individual… there are no favorites with this new key policy. We have a great building and take its security very seriously and the new key policy reflects the responsibility and accountability that those entrusted with keys for their term carry.

DOORBELLS:

Please note that due to security, the Lodge building doors may be locked during lodge meetings. If this is the case and you find yourself locked out, there is a doorbell installed to the right of the outside doors under the carport and to the right of the inside lodge room doors in the main lobby. So if you find the doors locked, just ring the bell and the tiler will be right there to let you in!

The 2009 Past Masters Dinner was held Thursday, October 22nd, 2009.

WM Jay Worth was the master of ceremonies and the special guest speaker was Joesph Harkin, Most Worshipful Deputy Grand Master.

Brother David Olson was honored as a 50 Year Member. It was a very special evening as Brother Olson related to the brethren and guests that he was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason in Hibbing, Minnesota by his father 50 years ago and was wearing a pin that was given to him by his father on that occasion.

CONGRATULATIONS DAVE!

The Lodge also experienced outstanding entertainment that night... Composer/Artist Sebastian Petak (son of Junior Warden Richard Petak) treated us to original compositions on the keyboard... that quite frankly mesmerized the audience. Sebastian will most certainly be back!

IN MEMORIAM: Brother Leroy John Schaetzel

Leroy John “Roy” Schaetzel, 82, formerly of Fond du Lac and Milwaukee, died Wednesday, December 17, 2008, in Sarasota, FL. He was born February 9, 1926 in Barton, WI, the son of Edward and Louise Heider Schaetzel.

A WW II veteran of many South Pacific campaigns, Roy served in the US Navy as a Pharmacists Mate 1st Class. After the war, he served as a Master Sergeant in the US Army Reserve. His involvement with the insurance business began in Fond du Lac and culminated in his founding and presidency of MEGACO, located in Milwaukee. After retirement, he relocated to Sarasota, FL. Roy was accomplished in all that he did and a stranger to no one. His involvement and interests were as dynamic as the man himself: Past Potentate of Tripoli Shrine Temple, Past Commodore of the Sarasota Yacht Club, and Past Commander of US Power Squadron District 10. He was a member of B.P.O.E. Lodge #57, Jesters, El Hajj, the Navy League, and St. Armands Key Lutheran Church. He was an accomplished pilot, was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, the Quiet Birdmen, and a 10-year volunteer at the Sarasota International Airport. He was a former member of the Fond du Lac Park Board, a past President of Church of Our Saviour Evangelical Lutheran Church Council, and a past board member of National Exchange Bank & Trust.
Surviving is his wife, Pam, of Sarasota, FL, two daughters; Sandra Uecker and Karen Pfeiffer, both of Corral de Tierra, CA, two grandchildren, Lee Uecker of Ft. Worth, TX and Drew Pfeiffer of Corral de Tierra, CA, and a great-granddaughter, HannahLee Uecker. He is further survived by two brothers, Lyle (Marianne) Schaetzel and Clayton (Grace) Schaetzel and four sisters, Evelyn (Elmer “Mike”) Seffren, Myrtle (Franklin) Gauger, Virgilyn Driscoll, and Marilyn (Gene) Johnson, and his former wife, June Albertz Schaetzel of Fond du Lac. His parents, a son, John, and a brother, Byron, preceded him in death.

Funeral Information

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, July 25, 2009, at Church of Our Saviour Evangelical Lutheran, 363 S. Main Street, Fond du Lac. The Rev. William Gruenstern will officiate and private family inurnment of cremated remains will follow in Estabrooks Cemetery. Uecker-Witt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Members of Trier-Puddy American Legion Post #75 will conduct military rites. Donations may be directed to Shriners Hospitals for Children at 1-800-241-4438, or the American Diabetes Association.

Brother Julien E. Kinzer, PM has passed to the Lodge eternal.

Brother Kinzer was a three time Past Master of Fond du Lac Fountain Lodge 26 in 1964, 1989, and 1990.

Julien Emile Kinzer, 86, passed away June 3, 2009, at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital, Milwaukee, following a short stay.

Mr. Kinzer was a long-time educator, teaching English at Goodrich High School from 1957 until his retirement in 1985. During his time at Goodrich, he also served as Chairman of the English Department, faculty advisor to the yearbook, faculty advisor to the Ski Club, and served as a wrestling coach. Prior to arriving in Fond du Lac, Mr. Kinzer was also a teacher at smaller schools in Utica and Streator, Ill.

Mr. Kinzer was born in Ottawa, Ill., on Dec. 15, 1922. He grew up on his family farm, the eighth of nine children. Mr. Kinzer served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a sergeant in an airlift unit, stationed in China, Burma, and India, from 1943 to 1946. After his discharge, he attended and graduated from the University of Illinois.

While there, he married his high school sweetheart, Jean Fowlie, in 1947. Together they raised seven children.

One child, Kathleen, predeceased her parents in 1982. Mrs. Jean Kinzer preceded her husband in death in 2002.

Mr. Kinzer was an active member and frequently an officer of several clubs and service organizations in Fond du Lac. He was a past Grand Exalted Ruler of the BPO Elks Lodge 57, was a Past Master of Masonic Lodge 26, and was a longtime member and chaplain of the Exchange Club. He was also a 52-year member and a deacon of the First Baptist Church of Fond du Lac.

It was there he met and then married Mildred Kremer, in 2004.

Mr. Kinzer was an avid traveler. He visited all 50 states and more than 40 countries on six continents. He also enjoyed playing golf as well as bridge and other card games.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; two brothers, Kenneth of Utica, Ill., and Bernard of Pawling, N.Y.; two sisters, Ione of Chicago, and Betty of Tallahassee, Fla.; six of his children, Cynthia (Dale) of Redondo Beach, Calif., Christine (Marie) of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Deborah of Manhattan Beach, Calif., James (Aaron) of Chicago, Richard of Manhattan Beach, and Rebecca (Craig) of Menomonee Falls; four stepchildren, Mark (Lisa), Marcy (Don), Mike (Deb), and Matt (Sally). Mr. Kinzer also leaves behind seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild.

Services: The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2009, at Mach Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 31 E. Division St., Fond du Lac. The Rev. Larry Witt will officiate. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Ottawa, Ill.

Visitation: The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Mach Funeral Chapel & Crematory; and again on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Memorials can be directed to First Baptist Church, Fond du Lac.

Mach Funeral Chapel & Crematory of Fond du Lac is serving the family.

Presented by Brother Scott W. Kreis, PM.
Kreis has been a Freemason for over five years and in that time, has served as Past Master of the Fond du Lac Lodge in 2007 and currently serves as Junior Deacon. Kreis has earned certificates of mastery in both the Masonic Education Correspondence Course and the Masonic Code Correspondence Course through the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Wisconsin. His areas of Masonic research include anti-masonry, and the commonalities of fraternal and esoteric orders both past and present. 2009 marks the first year of the establishment of the Fond du Lac Lodge Education Committee, of which Kreis is chairman of. Lectures and open forums are planned throughout the remainder of the year at the Fond du Lac Lodge.

FdL Lodge #26 has been active in the first quarter of 2009.

On January 19th, we traveled to Beaver Dam to capture the long lost Traveling Gavel.

We were treated to a fine catered meal of Chicken & Beef Tips. The hospitality of the Lodge was commendable. We then were further entertained by their annual Installation of Officer Program. A picture and an article was printed in the Masonic Journal, disclosing the amusing story of how the District 10 Gavel was lost for a year and the activity surrounding it's recovery. On February 3rd, we delivered the Gavel to the Sheboygan Lodge #11. The hospitality of our fellow lodges was again displayed, as Sheboygan Lodge enjoyed a very fine meal after their meeting. The FdL Brothers there that night were also given a tour of the lodge building. If you have never been through the Sheboygan Lodge building, you ought to make a point of seeing it. It is a landmark and is currently undergoing an extensive refurbishing. It marvelous combination of luxury & comfort.

Prior to my being Master of the lodge here, I didn't visit other lodges much. Man, I have missed a lot. The hospitality of our fellow brothers; the fraternity; the eye-opening opportunity to learn how other lodges perform the rituals, and even the trip there and back in a car full of brothers is enjoyable.

On March 19th, Pat Storrs came and oversaw our "School-of-Instruction". 11 FdL Lodge brothers were in attendance that night, as we went through the 2nd section of the Master Mason Degree. It was a fun evening and our district lecturer had fine comments about our lodge. Some of the comments in his report on the evening are:

"Fond du Lac #26's 2009 officer corps does a near flawless opening. They know the work well enough to be now concentrating on unison movements and voice inflections. In their Master Mason Drama... The ruffians are excellent. A candidate here would easily comprehend the story being told and receive a meaningful and memorable degree."

On top of all this, we have been enjoying Brother Kreis' brief talking points at each meeting on topics such as Masonic History, and Symbolism.

We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting on April 2nd. Especially if you have not been to a meeting in a while, please come. Meetings are entertaining and there is excellent social time afterward.

On April 3rd - Several of us are pooling to the District 10 Meeting in Port Washington
They have a Fish Dinner from 5-7, followed by the meeting. Wives are invited.

JOB'S DAUGHTERS BETHEL #3 - April / May 2009

Bethel #3 might be small, but we have BIG plans.

We recently attended Jamison Kifer's Installation as MC in West Bend. Most of the Bethel was in attendance for this great event. The next day we all attended the Shrine Circus in Milwaukee. We not only saw most of the show but sold 144 programs. Then, on Sunday we held a combined meeting with Port Washington for a Mid Eastern Day. The girls learned how to belly dance and enjoyed great mid eastern food after.

Fine Arts and Ritual Competitions are coming in April and we hope to have several entries. It is JD Week and the girls are participating in various activities to promote the Order. We will also be attending the Eastern Star meeting to do a presentation on Job's Daughters at the end of the month.

On May 3rd, we are planning to do an Open House for the Bethel - Job's Daughters - Get Acquainted Luncheon (12:30M - 2:30PM). We have talked about including the other bodies and hope to make it a reality. A tea party theme will be done. Anyone who knows of girls, they don't need to be your family, ages 9-18, please give their name(s) to me so they can be included on the list.

Many masons have joined our lodge because of their daughters joining the Bethel, this could be a chance for the lodge to grow as well. Think about it and join us on the 3rd. (920) 921-3107 or sultana313@charter.net.

FOND DU LAC CHAPTER #289, ORDER OF THE EASTERN STAR - April / May 2009

Fond du Lac Chapter #289, Order of the Eastern Star met Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at 6:00 for a pot luck dinner.

Nancy Saggio, Bethel Guardian of Bethel #3 Fond du Lac, International Order of Job’s Daughters and Jonathon Foster, Associate Bethel Guardian of Bethel #24 of Appleton quizzed the Eastern Star members on facts about Job’s Daughters. Those who answered correctly were awarded peanut butter eggs.

During the meeting which followed, it was agreed upon to have a non-perishable food collection at the next meeting for the Fond du Lac Food Pantry. Several members remembered to bring in large stocking caps and mittens to be donated to the Fond du Lac Fire Department. They will use these items during rescues involving crashes where glass needs to be broken to protect the victim being rescued.

Nancy Saggio, Bethel Guardian of Bethel #3, Fond du Lac Job’s Daughters invited us to participate in a prospective member open house and tea on May 3, 2009. All Masonic bodies are welcome to participate. More information will follow.

After the meeting the members put finishing touches on the Easter Cards made by the Worthy Matron, Susan Faris, to be sent to shut-in members and to be distributed to the residents of the Lutheran Home. Members also tagged the teddy bears that have been collected with tags identifying the Eastern Star as the group donating the bears. The bears were given to the Women’s Center. Refreshments were served by Nancy Saggio.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, April 22 at 7:00 with a dinner at 6:00. There will be election at the meeting. The refreshment committee is Diana, LeRoy, and Jessica Kifer.
The May meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 27 at 7:00. There will be a Mother’s Day Observance and reports from Grand Chapter, the Worthy Matron, Secretary, Treasurer and Trustees. Refreshments will be served by Barb Foster and Karen Stauffer.

MASTER'S MESSAGE - January 2009

My name is Jay Worth and I live in Fond du lac. I have been a Master Mason for 4 years. I was a Mason for about a year before becoming Junior Deacon of the lodge. Following that, I was Junior Warden, then Senior Warden and am now, honored to be Master of Fond du lac Lodge #26 for 2009.

This will be an exciting year. We already have in place a new computer system which will enable us to provide still pictures for degree work; video with sound for educational and entertaining demonstrations as well as music for lodge ceremonies.

In addition, the Lodge will be internet enabled, allowing us to access information at will, anytime needed.

We are planning an outdoor meeting for April or May. A site for the meeting is already being discussed. Brother Rich knows of a deep, wooded lot in town. It's close enough to be readily accessible, yet secluded enough to allow some privacy. I'm looking forward to that. I've never attended an outdoor meeting.

We going to track down the gavel and will be soliciting volunteers to travel to the lodge, currently in possession. Perhaps we can stop some place afterward, time permitting, for some fellowship.

Do you like to golf? I do, but don't seem to get to go as often as I'd like. Anyone interested in a Lodge Golf outing this summer, let me know. I'd like to get a few foursomes together for that this summer. If you have a golfing buddy who is not a Mason, bring him along. We can make a “Friend's Day” of it.

I have tried to convey to each and every brother of FDL Lodge #26, that this should be a good year. Meetings will be concise and interesting. Each meeting will be followed by opportunity to fraternize. I loved when PGM Holland used that term. That's important. Brothers within a fraternity, should fraternize. I'd like to get to know more of Lodge #26's members.

If you have not come to lodge in a while, please try to make it to a meeting in the near future. You will not be disappointed.

On November 6th we will have a new candidate for the lodge, Mr. Joe Thomas. Lets fill our sidelines and welcome Joe to the Masonic brotherhood.

Also on November 16th , Bethel #3 Jobs Daughters will hold their Thanksgiving Dinner at 5:00 p.m. Lets support our Jobies by a good turnout of the Brethren and ladies.

Mark your calendars for Saturday December 6th to Ring Bells for the Salvation Army Christmas appeal at Shopko’s west door. We will start at 8:00 a.m. with two hour shifts until 8:00 p.m. If you are a Shriner wear your Fez. If not try to wear something with the Masonic emblem. We also welcome the Jobies, Eastern Star and Amaranth members to join us in this endeavor.Time slots are as follows: 8:00 a.m.- 10:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m., 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m.,2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m.8:00 p.m. There will be a sign up sheet at lodge. Keep a look out for a picture of a check being presented to the Salvation Army for $250.00 by a couple of our members. The Masons are always supporting their community.

On October 25th we had a chili cook-off with brothers Jeff Keller and George Weigel making respective pots of chili. Unfortunately the turnout was poor for this event. Both recipes were tasty, we will try again next year. Remember we are Masons, TALK UP YOUR LODGE.

During the month of October the Jobies in Bethel #3 had some fun. The members and families along with 5 possible new members attended Little Farmer where they rode the balking hay wagon, ate caramel apple and fed the animals. Fond du Lac Chapter #289, Order of the Eastern Star held its October meeting on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 with 16 in attendance. To celebrate Halloween, everyone was encouraged to dress up in costumes and join in the chili supper before the meeting at 6:00 p m. There were games and prizes and a hauntingly good time was had by all in attendance.

The next meeting will be held on November 12, 2008. It is a reception for our own June Potts, who is Grand Representative to South Dakota. Light refreshments will be served as guests arrive for entertainment at 6:00.

A meeting will follow at 7:00 when Oriental Chapter #16 of Oshkosh will join Fond du Lac Chapter #289 in a consolidation ceremony preformed by the Grand Chapter Officers. In this one evening, Fond du Lac Chapter will more than double in size. Everyone is looking forward to this evening with great expectations. Desserts will be served after the meeting.

On October 2nd, 2008 we will hold a school of instruction for our lodge. Please make a true effort to attend this meeting. Brother Pat Storrs our district lecturer will conduct the school of instruction.

Also mark your calendars for October 23rd as we will honor the new 50 year members of the lodge and all of the Past Masters of the lodges with a dinner and program. Cost is only $11.00 per person.

We will start with a social time at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:00 p.m. with the program to follow.

The lodge approved to give to each Jobie and Adult leader of Bethel #3, $25.00 who attended the Jamboree event to help offset the cost. They would love to see you at one of their meetings.

We will also be donating $250.00 to the Salvation Army. This was approved by the lodge some time ago.

FOND DU LAC CHAPTER #289, ORDER OF THE EASTERN STAR - October 2008

Fond du Lac Chapter #289, Order of the Eastern Star met Wednesday, September 24 at 7:00.

All 18 officers were present with 6 on the sidelines. The chapter voted to have Oriental Chapter #16 of Oshkosh consolidate with Fond du Lac Chapter #289. Our membership will more than double with this action. A dinner preceding the meeting made a profit used for one of the many charities the order is responsible to donate to. Anyone is invited to the dinners preceding the meetings with an RSVP and $5.00.

The next meeting of the Chapter is scheduled for October 22. Everyone is encouraged to wear a costume to celebrate Halloween. Dinner will be chili with all the trimmings. June Potts and Thelma Markham are in charge of the refreshments after the meeting.

Looking ahead to November, the meeting will move to the 2nd Wednesday so it will not interfere with Thanksgiving. On November 12, we will hold a reception in honor of our own June Potts, Grand Representative of South Dakota in Wisconsin, with entertainment at 6:00 pm. A closed meeting will follow with refreshments offered to all who attend.

We are turning the lights on again and putting the craftsmen back to work at the Lodge. September is the start of the Fall session for new work on our calendar. Last June, the Grand Lodge had its meeting in Madison. I would like to thank the brothers and ladies who attended the meetings and other activities.

Several Brothers from the lodge welcomed the Masonic All Star Soccer Teams to Fond du Lac at Marion University. We also fed them hamburgers and chicken breast with pasta salad for supper.
Then the following day we manned the booth and sold food and drinks. A big thank you to all of the members who helped make this first years attempt of this event for Fond du Lac Lodge #26 a success: Scott Bond, Burt Mayborne, LeRoy Kifer, George Weigel, Jay Worth, Dave Olson and his wife Sherry, Kevin Sherman, Ben Parkhurst, Jeff Keller, Rich Petak and Jamison Kifer and everyone else who helped. Without all of you none of this would have happened.

And none of this could have happen without the help from Tana Laudolff at the Fond du Lac area convention center and Nancy Storrs, chairperson of the Masonic All Star Soccer Games.

I personally would like to thank everyone for stepping in and making sure everything flowed well while I was sick.

JOB'S DAUGHTER NEEDS YOUR HELP!

We have an outstanding Bethel in Fond du Lac. It has increased in members and two of our girls have been GrandBethel Honored Queens for Wisconsin! But we are losing some members who have decided to leave and reactivate the Bethel in Plymouth.

Fortunately, Mom Nancy Saggio is staying as our Bethel Guardian. We will continue to be active but we need your help to find more girls!

Who can join? Girls from 10-20.

To join they need a Masonic Heritage but it does not have to be someone living. It can come through a Dad, Grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, stepfather. If you have a daughter, granddaughter, niece, or a friends daughter you think highly of suggest that they check out Job's Daughters.

Job's Daughter's is a special organization for girls! They wear white robes at most of their meetings. They open and close with prayer and are famous for their "Living Cross" as the girls kneel to form a cross. They have a lot of fun as they visit Bethels in other cities. Jobies develops girls into mature young women who can organize, lead meetings, and speak publically: skills that carry over into college and adult life.

It's a great opportunity for any girl and right now our Bethel needs your help to grow.

Fond du Lac Chapter #289, Order of the Eastern Star held a picnic on July 23, 2008 to Honor the Masons. Brother Masons present from the Fond du Lac Lodge #26 were Burt Mayborne, Rock Morgan and his wife, Dave Olsen and his wife Sharon, Kevin Sherman and Le Roy Kifer. Also in attendance was John Knee, Past Grand Patron of Wisconsin and his wife, Linda Knee. Linda Knee is a District Deputy for the state who spoke on the charities of the Eastern Star before the meeting. After the meeting Linda conducted a school of instruction to prepare the officers for Official Visit on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 with the Associate Grand Conductress, Mary Rasmussen. A dinner will precede that meeting at 6:00.

Myth: Pythagoras was Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason.

Fact: So say the ritualists of yesteryear, and their successors have compounded the fabrication. Pythagoras was indeed a great man. Although he left behind no writings of his own, his students did. His influence has extended to the present day. It is little wonder his teachings have reached into Freemasonry, even if only fragmentarily. But, even if a form of Freemasonry was known while he lived (582-507 B.C.), he could not have been made a Master Mason. This degree wasn't invented (or had it evolved) until the late 1720's. Actually there are those who believe that the Freemasonry that did mature into what we have today was influenced by the Pythagoreans.

Myth: Much of our Masonic ritual was written by William Shakespeare.

Fact: There is no evidence to indicate Shakespeare even knew there was an organization of stone masons that would eventually become Speculative Freemasonry. The old Gothic Constitutions are the basis for The Constitutions of the Free-Masons compiled by Dr. James Anderson in 1722 and adopted in 1723. There is nothing in the Gothic tomes that remotely resembles the writing of the Bard. Many of Shakespeare's phrases have found their way into the rituals of the Craft, but they certainly were not written especially for this purpose. It would be nice to claim William as an early accepted member, but we can't. Let's stop trying.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Last year a senior should have received a Masonic Scholarship and was very disappointed when she did not. She was well qualified and deserving and had strong Masonic ties. They were overlooked because we didn't realize she was a senior.

Please let us know by December 1 if you have a child or grandchild who will graduate from an area High school next spring. We will inform the school and ask them to give special consideration if they apply.

The 2008 Wisconsin Masonic High School All Star Soccer Games are now in the history books, but Fond du Lac Lodge 26 had a great time at the event last weekend!

On Friday (7/25/08), Lodge 26 welcomed the players and provided the food for the player picnic that evening .

For Saturday's (7/26/08) games, Lodge 26's LeRoy Kifer presented the Flag and Lodge 26 provided the game concessions.

Thanks to the Soccer Committee for getting Lodge 26 involved in this great event, especially Nancy Storrs and David Tainter.

Player Selection Process

The Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association (WSCA) is the coaching arm of the Wisconsin Soccer Association (WSA). Member coaches nominate graduated Seniors from the Class of 2008 to the state-wide event, the WSCA builds teams out of the pool of nominations.

The Free and Accepted Masons of Wisconsin sponsor and coordinate the event. Tickets are $10 to attend the Ladies and Men’s matches – one admission, two games. Proceeds from the event support soccer related scholarships for youth. July 26, Saturday, Ladies Game is 11:00 AM, Men’s Game is 1:00 PM – Smith Fields of Marian University, Fond du Lac.

National Anthem

The National Anthem will be performed by George Caldwell at 10:45 AM Saturday morning.

George is a seasoned performer with Fond du Lac Community Theatre with appearances in over 40 shows, George is well known for his portrayal of US president Harry S. Truman – and recently in the role of “Henry” for the Community Theatre’s Production of “The Fantasticks” in 2007.

George will be performing the national anthem A Capella.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR JUST ONE OF THE ALL STARS...

Lauren Gunderson, a UW Madison recruit for Ladies Soccer, was the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association (WSCA) "Player of the Year for 2008". She will be on the roster, and definitely on the Soccer Field at Marian University in Fond du Lac as the ladies game kicks off Saturday, July 26 at 11:00 for the Wisconsin Masonic All Star Soccer Games.

For seventeen years, the Masons of Wisconsin have sponsored the Masonic All Star Soccer Games for graduated high school seniors. Previously the games were played in Kenosha, Stevens Point, Neenah, Milwaukee, West Bend and Madison. For 2008 through 2011 the Masonic All Star Soccer Games will be held in Fond du Lac. The showcase games gives the top 36 young men and top 36 young women in the class of 2008 one last chance to take the field - while raising funds for charity.

Proceeds from the Masonic All Star Soccer Games are directed toward Soccer Related Scholarships for Youth. The games are a great family event, with proceeds going to a good cause.

Lauren Gunderson, Ladies WSCA Player of the Year as named by the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association will play for UW Madison in 2008.

Gunderson, a standout player at Middleton High School is just one of the All Stars that will be in Fond du Lac on Saturday for the 11:00 AM Start of the Ladies Masonic All Star Soccer Game. Men's game follows at 1:00 PM. Admission to the All Star Games is $10. Just one low price buys admission to two All Star Games. Concessions will be offered by Fond du Lac Masonic Lodge during the games, and the All Star Raffle (tickets $5 day of the game) offers chances for prizes such as Sport Bags, T-Shirts, Lapel Pins, Gift Certificates, and Ticket Packages to Milwaukee Wave Professional Soccer or Admirals Hockey Games.

Masonic All Star Soccer Players from throughout Wisconsin of the same high caliber as Gunderson, will be showcased in their final prep event at Marian University on July 26th. Pre-game events take place starting at 10:45 am, with the Ladies Kickoff at 11:00.

Tickets are $10 which covers both the Ladies and Men's All Star Games - one price - two games included.

Seating is in the Bleachers at Smith Field at Marian College Corner of Division and Prairie Road.

Tickets will be available at Smith Field.

The All Star Games is a Fund Raiser for the Masonic Soccer Foundation. It is our ONLY event of the year currently, so lawn seating is not an option.

Fond du Lac Lodge #26 is proud to announce that Marian University will host the Wisconsin Masonic High School All Star Soccer Games Friday and Saturday, July 25-26 at Smith Fields in Fond du Lac.

The Wisconsin Masonic All Star Soccer Games recognize outstanding soccer athletes, in cooperation with the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association, bring the best players in the state together in a showcase soccer game and camp - entirely at no charge to the athletes. The athletes learn leadership, and teamwork, while learning about philanthropy - and how THEY can make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

2008 marks the 17th annual Masonic All Star Soccer Games. The games provide recognition and sporting excellence for you. Previous members of the Masonic All Star Soccer Teams have gone on to excellence with MLS and NCAA teams.

The Free and Accepted Masons of Wisconsin are a Fraternal Organization with lodges located throughout the state. Philanthropy is just one of the values to which the Masons are committed. Some of the finest people in Wisconsin are Masons. Those whom you might recognize include Tommy Thompson, Scott McCallum, Lee S. Dreyfus, all former Wisconsin Governors, and JB Van Hollen, currently Wisconsin’s Attorney General. Others may include your neighbor, father, or other friends and family members.

Masons and Non-masons work together to bring you what we have come to know as “Wisconsin’s Best Soccer Games” – The Wisconsin Masonic All Star Soccer Games.

The Masonic All Star Soccer Games have always supported donations to charity as part of their program. In 2008, after considerable thought and evaluation, we felt that scholarships would be the most charitable effort we could support. We know that few athletes ever receive an “athletic scholarship” – and soccer players receive fewer scholarships yet…. With that in mind, we are pleased to be able to begin 2008 with a new mission that we and – we hope the public, also will embrace. Beginning this year, proceeds from these games are directed toward Soccer Scholarships for Youth in Wisconsin.

Lodge 26 Donates to Flood Relief

On June 27, 2008 Fond du Lac Lodge #26 Junior Deacon, George Weigel, presented a $250 check to Broken Bread Chair, Kathleen Mac Gregor, to aid in replenishing their food supply which was destroyed in the June flooding.

Broken Bread distributes food and other supplies on Friday afternoons to those in the Fond du Lac area. Over 100 volunteers collect and distribute food gathered from grocery stores, restaurants, bakeries, correctional institutions, as well as produce and dairy items purchased by Broken Bread. Other large contributions of food are received from the Boy Scout, Girl Scout, and Letter Carrier food drives. A group of volunteers prepare a light meal to serve our guests. Broken Bread serves 170 to 180 families each week and provided food to 27,000 people in 2006. Broken Bread has been a chartered mission of the Cathedral since 1991. The Cathedral also serves as a distribution site for the Share Program, a statewide aid organization that distributes food once a month.

The Wisconsin Masonic All Star soccer games recognize outstanding soccer athletes in cooperation with the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association bringing the best players in the state together in a showcase soccer game and camp - entirely at no charge to the athletes. Only high school graduates nominated by their high school coaches are eligible for this honors program which through its activities raises funds for charities including Shrine Hospitals, and Wisconsin Special Olympics. Although hundreds of youth are candidates, and many are nominated just 72 are named to be part of the Wisconsin Masonic All Star soccer games.

In 2008, a new initiative makes the games more meaningful for the players and the coaches — as well as for the organizers. This season marks the first year in which proceeds from the games will begin to accrue toward scholarships for soccer athletes to be presented in the future.

"By nature of the event, as a statewide game, we want as many communities as possible to share in the excitement in this top-rated soccer showcase," says Nancy Storrs, chairman of the Masonic Soccer Foundation. "We're excited to be coming to Fond du Lac – and especially to Marian University because of their excellent facilities. The Smiths Fields is a first rate complex with outstanding field and athlete facilities. We're pleased to be partnering with Marian University. When the all star athletes arrive on July 25, they will be meeting their teammates and coaches, being welcomed by the Masonic Lodge members of Fond du Lac, before getting some field time at the Fondy Soccer Complex.

I would like to thank everyone for their help in lodge while I am under the weather. It is nice to know that your officers will be there for you.

and Divan. Please show up and support your Shrine & Blue Lodge.

When you see Burt, LeRoy, George and others that worked hard to put this dinner together, tell them thanks.

I would like to tell the Jobie Bethel #3 how much their card meant to me! It's hard to get down with so many young ladies wishing you well. I hope everyone had a great 4th of July. Also have a great summer.

I hope to see you in September at Lodge. We will finish up on Br. Ben Parkhursts’ MM degree and putting on the degree work for Mr. Joe Thomas who elected to receive the degree’s conferred in our lodge.

Bethel #3 is on the go again. Our Installation will be June 29th at 1:30pm. Alexis Brokl will become the new HQ.

We have 2 meetings left in Alaina's term. June 2nd and June 16th. You are more than welcome to attend either or both.

We go to Noah's Ark on the 25th and will be attending Supreme Session. (our International meeting) in Middleton at the end of July.

August brings Jamboree and Marisa Leisten goes out as the Grand Bethel Honored Queen with Alexis Brokl, both #3 girls, going is as the new Gradn Bethel Honored Queen.

PLEASE attend on Sunday August 17th at 9:ooam at the Green Lake Conference Center. Let me know you are attending and there will be no gate charge. This is a once in a lifetime ceremony to witness, so please come and support our girls.

Fond du Lac Chapter #289, Order of the Eastern Star met on Wednesday, June 11, with a soup and sandwich supper preceding the meeting. Father’s Day and Flag Day were observed. Twelve members participated in the baby identification. Root beer floats were served after the meeting by Bernice Labus and Doris Kerski.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, July 23, with a 6:00 pm picnic preceding the meeting. Brats and hamburgers will be served. Members were asked to bring a salad or dessert. Joining us will be Linda Knee, District Deputy, who will help prepare us for our Grand Officer Visit. Be prepared with your memory work, balloting, and initiatory parts. On Wednesday, August 27, the Associate Grand Conductress, Mary Rasmussen will be our official visitor.

June 29 – July 2, 2008 will be Supreme Council in Seattle, Washington. I will be going and will be the page to Honored Lady Barbara Lee Overton Supreme Conductress. She will be elected to Supreme Associate Matron at this session and hopefully her choice will also Sir Knight Dwight Cosgrove from Virginia.

July 26, 2008 is the reception for HL Barbara Lee Overton Supreme Conductress in Madison. You should have received your invitation. If not let me know so we can get one for you.

The date for Sir Knight Jim Brynes Ways and Means project for Grand Court will be August 9th. This will take place before our advance night, so please mark your calendars and be prepared to help. We are sure to have more information later.

Some interesting facts found on the internet:

Myth: Freemasonry did not operate during World War II in the countries controlled by the Nazis.

Fact: It did, but not openly. (Even today there are countries in which Freemasons must meet in secret.) In the infamous Buchenwald concentration camp. the Masonic population reached close to 100 in October 1944. According to M. Jattefaux, a French Freemason, the known Masons met daily. Occupying the minds of these men with Masonic ritual and lessons helped relieve them of their anxieties. Masonic subjects were selected and by word of mouth, transmitted from one prison block to the next prison block. There quiet discussions would take place. Then block by block the results of their debate returned.

Myth: Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry were Freemasons.

Fact: Neither Thomas Jefferson or Patrick Henry were members of the Craft. An exhaustive search of Masonic records in Virginia, and elsewhere, offers no iota of evidence to make them Freemasons. Jefferson participated in the cornerstone laying of his University at Charlottesville, which was done Masonically. He praised Freemasonry and his own words proved he had never been a member of the Craft.

OES Honor the Masons Picnic

On July 23, 2008, Fond du Lac Chapter #289, Order of the Eastern Star is having a picnic to Honor the Masons.

Our District Deputy, Linda Knee, will be there and give a little talk about the Worthy Grand Matron and Worthy Grand Patron's project.

The picnic begins at 6:00.

Mason's and their wives are invited as our guests. Hamburgers and brats will be served as well as salads and desserts brought by the officers. We will adjourn to our meeting at 7:00. Anyone who is a member of OES may attend the meeting.
